Pesticides - Alternatives
- Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
- As defined by the EPA, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. Congressional legislation recently introduced by US Senator Lautenberg further defines IPM in schools as a method that promotes non-chemical methods of pest prevention and management. When non-chemical methods have proven ineffective, the least toxic alternative may be used (see Last Resort). IPM programs use comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.
- Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM)
- An effective and environmentally sensitive approach to weed management that uses non-toxics alternatives and mechanical removal as the first approach to weed control, and uses herbicides only if other solutions have been proven ineffective.
- Last Resort
- A policy in which pesticides are only used once all safer, environmentally sensitive approaches have been exhuasted.
