Railyard Contamination Definitions
- Ambient Air:
Surrounding air; outside air.
- Plume:
A body of contaminated groundwater.
- Trichloroethene (TCE)*:
Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a nonflammable, colorless liquid. It is used mainly as a solvent to remove grease from metal parts, but it is also an ingredient in adhesives, paint removers, typewriter correction fluids, and spot removers.
TCE is believed to be a carcinogen and breathing it for long periods may cause nerve, kidney, and liver damage. Drinking small amounts for long periods may cause liver and kidney damage, impaired immune system function, and impaired fetal development in pregnant women, although the extent of some of these effects is not yet clear.
- Tetrachloroethene (PCE)*:
Tetrachloroethylene is a manufactured chemical that is widely used for dry cleaning of fabrics and for metal-degreasing. It is also used to make other chemicals and is used in some consumer products.
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has determined that PCE may reasonably be anticipated to be a carcinogen.
- Volatile Organic Compound (VOC):
-
Any organic compound which evaporates readily into the atmosphere. Many VOCs are harmful to human health.
* Based on information from the Department of Health and Human Services ToxFAQs.
